Telugu movies seem to be obessed with the height of their leading men. No wonder then, that all popular songs describe the hero as a 6 footer!

The adjective "Aaradugula" (a colloquial Telugu word describing a 6-footer) seems to have become a favourite with mana lyricists when writing songs for our stars. Take the chartbuster Aaradugula bulletu... from Pawan Kalyan's Attarintiki Daredi for example. And Pawan Kalyan's stands a good two inches below the 6 ft mark! Mahesh Babu and Prabhas are over six feet tall and are routinely addressed as "Aarudgula something" at least once in all their movies.

Lyricist Anantha Sriram used the phrase, 'Aaraduguluntada yedaduglesthada', in the hit song from Seethamma Vakitlo Sirimalle Chettu, picturised on Samantha dreaming about Mahesh. Ramajogayya Sastry came up with the lines 'Aaradugula andagadu nannu Barbie girl annadu', for Anushka to sing when describing Prabhas in Mirchi.

Song writer Chandrabose was one of the first to use the details of height of the actors in songs. Remember the line 'Ayidhunnara adugula bangaranni alupannadi erugani Ravi Tejanni', from Ravi Teja's Naa Autograph Sweet Memories? Admittedly, he was inspired by popular Tamil lyricist, Varimuthu. "In Jeans (1998) lyricist Vairimuthu started the trend of using details like weight, height etc., and it became a rage," recalls Chandrabose.

Once a phrase clicks, it just seems to stick on, till another catch-phrase captures popular filmi imagination.

After Sirivennela Seetharama Sastry used the word Yeh Maya Chesavo gani in Okkadu a decade ago, the phrase is still very much in vogue even today. "It will continue till the music director, actor and the audience get bored of it," says Chandrabose adding, "The phrase will be used only once in a film, and soon will look for more catchy flattering lines."

But the Aaradugula phraseology will only suit taller stars like Rana, Venky, Mahesh and Prabhas etc. It would look redundant when talking about NTR Jr, Bunny or Charan. Director Chandra Siddhartha believes it has something to do with the way films are made in Tollywood. "These days, stories are created only after the lead actor and director are finalised. So the songs, dance moments etc are conceived with the sole intention of
reflecting the lead actor," says Chandra Siddharth adding, "Music directors order the writers to come up with phrases that will please their respective fan bases."
