Actor-politician Mohan Babu’s suggestion to postpone the 100 years of Indian Cinema celebrations scheduled to take place in Chennai from September 21 to 24 is the reason behind the latest dispute among T-town filmmakers. But the organisers are in no mood to listen to him, want to go ahead with the function.
The organisers were quick to decline the proposal stating the celebrations are a landmark moment in the history of Indian cinema. Noted Telugu film producer Katragadda Prasad told DC, “Since we have the President’s approval on these dates, we’ve planned grand celebrations. We’ve been preparing for the past six months. A proposal to stop the celebrations just 15 days ahead of the function is unfair.”
Prasad added, “When film shootings, private parties, film releases and audio launches are going as per schedule, why only defer the 100-year celebrations. It’s not fair for Mohan Babu garu to release a statement to the press before speaking to us. We’re requesting him to not make Telugus a laughing stock in front of other film industries. Even his children Lakshmi and Vishnu Manchu have played significant roles in planning the celebrations.”
C. Kalyan, president of the South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce, points out, “It’s difficult to postpone the scheduled event since the President of India, CMs and governors of four states are attending. We will try to convince Mohan Babu.”
President of India Pranab Mukherjee and the chief ministers and governors of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala are expected to grace the occasion. Mohan Babu feels “Telangana and Seemandhra are like two eyes of the film industry. When the people are in distress, it’s not fair on our part (actors and filmmakers) to indulge in celebrations. Therefore, I request the Film Chamber of Commerce and Producers Council to stay away from the celebrations.”
