Will Pawan Kalyan grow political wings?

Is Union minister Chiranjeevi's brother, celebrity actor Pawan Kalyan looking to test political waters? The 42-year-old actor left everybody guessing about his political ambitions when at a gathering of his fans recently, he stirred them up to shout 'Jai hind'. The sold out fans were only too eager to do his bidding, with zest.

Pawan Kalyan, whose fans have given him the 'Power Star' title, recently delivered the hit 'Attarintiki Daredi'. His earlier film 'Gabbar Singh' was also a huge hit at the box office. That success ended the drought of hits for the last 10 years.

When Chiranjeevi launched his Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) in 2008, Pawan Kalyan stood by his brother as the leader of the young wing of the party and campaigned for the party. He even took a dig at Congressmen openly, using language that was not used before from the political platform. "Panchaloodatheesi Kodatham (We will remove their dhotis and beat them up)," he said during his campaign. In the 2009 elections, the PRP did not do so well and eventually Chiranjeevi merged his party with the Congress and is now a Union minister.

The fact that his brother merged the PRP with the Congress did not go down quite well with Pawan Kalyan and this was a well-known thing. Chiru's younger brother stopped associating himself with politics or the political ambitions of his brother once the PRP was merged with the Congress. "Everyone felt that he seemed not so happy with the U-turn that Chiranjeevi took. Pawan Kalyan has a strong youth following and appears honest. It would be a welcome thing if he jumped into politics directly," said well-known producer Chadalavada Srinivasa Rao.

Of late, producer-director Ram Gopal Varma too has been trying to instigate Pawan Kalyan to get into politics considering that he has a huge fan following. Pawan Kalyan chose not to respond to the suggestion of RGV despite his repeated unsolicited suggestions. Pawan Kalyan, however, chose to address the 'Pawanism' term coined by his fans of late. "I myself do not know what it means. I would like it to mean that one is interested in the welfare of the society," Pawan Kalyan said during the 'Thank you' meet organized with his fans for the success of his latest film.

The actor made an emotional speech even hinting that he would get to meet them more in the future. Was it to mean that he would grow political wings?

In fact, before PRP was launched, Pawan Kalyan would meet a lot of his fans, talk to them and feel the pulse of the people. A direct-to-the-face person, the actor, who makes no effort to hide his emotions, even went and surrendered his licensed weapon at the Jubilee Hills police station in October 2007, responding to a family situation.

In October 2007 itself, he announced the formation of what he called the 'Common Man protection Force' (CMPF) with a huge banner having pictures in the backdrop of people including Mahatma Gandhi, Subhash Chandra Bose, Bhagat Singh, Che Guevera, Mother Teresa, Dr BR Ambedkar, Jawaharlal Nehru and others. However, the following year when a woman went to his house to seek help, people close to the star sent her away saying the CMPF does not involve in settling personal and private issues. Nothing has been heard of the CMPF after that.

That Pawan Kalyan was made of sterner stuff, was demonstrated when he gave a public demonstration of his capabilities on March 26, 1997 at the Hari Hara Kala Bhavan in Secunderabad. In his launch film titled 'Akkada Ammayi Ekkada Abbayi' in 1997, the actor showed his martial arts skills. However, when some people dismissed them as filmi stunts, Kalyan tied the tongues that wagged by getting cars to be driven on his palms placed down to the ground and also gave a karate performance. Needless to say, elder brother Chiranjeevi who was at hand appreciated his brother publicly.

The actor has on many occasions showed that he did not believe in taking criticism lying down. When a newspaper wrote about an issue involving him and a Rayalaseema politician, which he denied repeatedly, the actor suddenly took to the streets and marched to the office with a large number of people spontaneously following him on April 22, 2003. Even during the 'Vajrotsavam' of the Telugu film industry, he gave tongue-in-cheek replies in a speech directed against actor Mohan Babu in January 2007.

When rumours were strongly doing the rounds in recent times that all was not well between him and his elder brother Chiranjeevi, as if to scotch all the rumours, Pawan Kalyan drove Chiranjeevi's son Ram Charan Tej, the bridegroom, for his wedding on June 14, 2012. That act, however, was not convincing enough for the people who still suspected that not all was well within the family.

At some audio functions of Ram Charan Tej's films, Pawan Kalyan's conspicuous absence would irk fans who would chant his name.

Now the chant is becoming more forceful — but for his entry into politics. The question is: Will Pawan Kalyan float his own party?
