Tollywood Hits and Flops in 2013

Tollywood has witnessed 178 straight releases this year and as always there are few expected star film hits, Surprising low budget winners, highly expected films ending up as disasters.

2013 is the year of new talent. More than the formulaic and commercial entertainers, new young directors caught moviegoers attention with refreshing and unique scripts. Swamy Ra Ra, Venkatadri Express, Uyyala Jampala, Prema Katha Chitram are to name a few.

Star Power & Expected Hits

Mahesh Babu, Venkatesh and Ram Charan started off the year with a bang with highly anticipated Seethamma Vakitlo Sirimalle Chettu and Naayak movies. SVSC brought back the craze of multistarrers thanks to director Srikanth Addala, while Naayak has earned good collections in AP joining 45 Crores plus club.

Young Rebel Star Prabhas with his stellar performance scored a blockbuster Mirchi, which ended up as highest collected film in his career. NTR has managed to surpass 40 Crores club with his much awaited Baadshah while it was record hit in overseas for him.

Ravi Teja has finally put an end to his flop streak this year with Balupu, thanks for the right mix of commercial elements.

The biggest Telugu hit was Pawan Kalyan's Attarintiki Daaredi, which despite being leaked before its theatrical release, managed to collect a whopping 75 plus crore at the box office.

Big budget Misses

Victory Venkatesh’s Shadow, Ram’s Ongol Gitta and Ram Charan’s Thoofan ended up as biggest disasters of the year. Allu Arjun’s Iddarammayilatho though received mixed response initially, it ended up as a lose venture to producer. Same is the case with NTR’s Ramayya Vastavayya. Despite good first half and NTR in a youthful look, the routine and uninteresting second half played the spoilsport for RV though it deserved to be better. Both Nagarjuna’s films Greeku Veerudu, Bhai failed to live up to the expectations. Gundello Goadari was a commercial failure. Multistarrer film Masala failed to create the expected excitement at the ticket counters.

Small is Big

2013 had miraculous small budget winners. These movies struck the right chord with the audiences also being gold diggers at the Box-Office. The profits are huge for Prema Katha Chitram, Swamy Ra Ra stories laced with horror, crime, considering its low budget. Venkatadri Express, Uyyala Jampala with its refreshing screenplay has entertained good number of audiences. Indraganti’s Anthaku Mundu Aa Tharuwatha is one of the notable releases this year for its impressive casting and beautiful narration. Nithin’s Gunde Jaari Gallanthayinde is another surprising blockbuster that has set the cash registers ringing in overseas too.
