Mysore: An under-construction two-storey building collapsed, injuring nine labourers, here on Friday afternoon.
Around 25 labourers were at the site when the building caved in in Kuvempunagar second stage, falling under 17th ward of Zone-3. The injured have been identified as N. Mahesh, M. Mahesh, Rajesh, Shivaraj, Basappa, Shivkumar, Kumar and Mahesh. They are being treated at different private hospitals in the area.
Labourer Mahadevaswamy, who escaped unhurt, told Deccan Chronicle that the construction of the building was almost over and roofing for the first floor was being done. Majority of the labourers were out for lunch at the time of collapse, considerably reducing the number of casualties.
“The building caved in around 1.15 pm. We are not sure what led to the accident. Workers on the ground floor ran to safety and those on the first floor jumped to adjacent buildings,” he said.
Local residents said that sub-standard construction work led to the collapse.
The curing work was not up to the mark, they pointed out. Mandya-based businessman N. Manjunath, who is the owner of the building, has been detained by the Kuvempunagar police for questioning. The construction work started three months ago and the approval had been given in February for ground plus one house.
ACP Prakash Gowda, MLA M.K. Somasekhar, corporator ‘Snake’ Shyam and tahsildar Naveen Joseph visited the spot. The police and fire brigade personnel, with the help of some local residents, cleared the debris.
