Tollywood’s latest entrant Sheraz Prince is a bundle of nerves ahead of the release of his debut film 'Parcel'. Unusual for a newcomer, his maiden film belongs to the horror genre and holds a record even before its release. It will be India’s first silent horror flick and the world’s eighth.
An excited Sheraz says, “It was challenging for a debutante like me to act in a silent film. I was apprehensive at first, but the story prompted me to take it up. I always want to be different, so I’m making my debut in a novel way. It’s my confidence that makes me take up challenges.”
Elaborating on the film’s records, he shares, “We’ve done our research well. There were seven silent horror films made in the world; one French film, two in Germany, one in Japan, three American films and the last one was made in 1925. There’s been no other film after that, except ours.”
He is quick to add that joining the record books was not the team’s aim. “We didn’t make the film for records. The script didn’t require dialogues so we opted to turn it into a silent film. It will be along the lines of Hollywood films and a new experience for the Telugu audience. I’ve heard that Mahesh Bhatt is planning a silent horror film and so is a Malayalam filmmaker. I’m happy that Telugus are ahead.”
On the unusual title of the film ('Parcel'), Sheraz says, “That’s a surprise element that I can’t reveal. I play a professional photographer and the story revolves around a girl (played by Ramya) and me. It’s an edge-of-the-seat thriller.”
Making inroads into Tollywood hasn’t been a cakewalk for the newcomer without any filmy connections.
“I lost my dad when I was three and struggled to get a Hotel Management degree in Dubai. I worked at BPOs in the city for Dell and Genpact before entering films. It’s my passion for acting that attracted me to showbiz and my family has been very supportive.”
While his debut film is yet to hit the theatres, he already has something else to look forward too. “Soon, I’m going to do a movie with a very well-known filmmaker. Everything has been finalised but I’m just waiting for them to make a formal announcement before I can say anything else,” Sheraz reveals.
