'Naa Bangaaru Talli', a film based on the true story of a girl from Rajahmundry, was adjudged the Best Feature Film at the recent Trinity International Film Festival.

The movie’s idea came to film-maker Rajesh ‘Touchriver’ Thodupuzha when his wife, social activist and founder of Prajwala, Hyderabad, Dr Sunitha Krishnan, was sharing stories of rescuing girls sold to traffickers.

"I took an instance that happened in Rajahmundry, of a girl who was sold. It struck me as a relevant subject because if you open a newspaper today, you will see at least half a page of cases of violence against women. These issues need to be discussed," he says.

But the important task was to make the movie a family entertainer with commercial elements. "I want the whole family to sit and watch the film together. There is no nudity or obscenity involved while we were true to the story," says Rajesh.

The background score for 'Naa Bangaaru Talli' has been composed by music director Shantanu Moitra, while singers like Shreya Ghosal have lent their voice.

The lead actress, Anjali Patil, is a graduate of the National School of Drama. She was one of the two Indians to win an award in the International Film Festival of India in Goa in November 2012 for her performance in 'With You Without You'.

Meanwhile, Siddique, a veteran Malayalam actor, plays Anjali’s father in 'Naa Bangaaru Talli'.

As a film-maker, Rajesh is no newcomer to the field of meaningful cinema. He had earlier made waves with films like In the name of 'Buddha', which was a Cannes nomination but was banned in India as it dealt with the subject of Sri Lankan refugees.

Currently basking in the glory of the award, Rajesh says that this is perhaps the biggest international honour for Telugu cinema after 'Daasi' in 1988. "Serious and non-commercial Telugu cinema has not travelled much to other countries. That is what I wanted to do, to show the culture as well as the problems that ail this part of the world. This itself makes it a personal achievement for me," he concludes.
